Can I get free legal advice?

On court sitting days, Tasmania Legal Aid solicitors are usually present and can help if you don’t have a lawyer.  Ask the court's security guards to point you to them.

There are also a number of Community Legal Centres in Tasmania that provide free legal advice.  You can find details on the Support Services page under Legal Advice.

The Hobart Community Legal Service can assist people with minor criminal matters and help with getting legal aid grants. They have duty lawyers available at the Hobart Magistrates Court.  The duty lawyer is a free services and they can assist you with adjournments, referrals and simple pleas of guilty.  The duty lawyer office is located next to Court 5 at the Hobart Magistrates Court.
